Forests for Cereals

The concept of “alley cropping” has roots in ancient traditional farming systems. However, in highly degraded soils, using only a single row of trees between grain rows, such as maize, does not allow grain production without external inputs. With this course, our proposal is to test several ways of integrating trees into grain production.

What you will learn

  • Grow cereals with integrated tree systems
  • Boost grain yields using alley cropping
  • Design multi-row tree systems for maize
  • Combine trees, crops, and green manures
  • Build fertile soils with living biomass
  • Apply regenerative agroforestry methods
  • Manage pruning to support crop growth
  • Scale agroforestry for grain production
  • Create resilient maize production systems
  • Turn degraded soils into productive fields
